Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
The assassination of Abraham Lincoln took place on April 14, 1865 at 10:15 PM. The assassin was an actor named John Wilks Booth. Booth was born on May 10, 1838. He was a very good actor, and was the lead in some of Shakespeare’s most famous work.
John Wilkes Booth was a racist and sided with the south during the Civil War. He hated the current president, Abraham Lincoln. It just so happens that Booth was against everything Abraham believed in. In 1864, Booth formed a plot to kidnap Lincoln, luckily, this plan failed.
In 1865, Booth orginized a group of people that would help him complete his plans, assist him, and rebel against Abraham Lincoln. This group was made out of Samuel Arnold, Michael O'Laughlen, John Surratt, Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, David Herold, and Booth himself.
On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. Two days after this important event, Lincoln made a speech at the White House. Somewhere in the crowd, Booth sat infuriated with Lincoln's words. He now turned to the plot to assassinate Lincoln.
Booth and his coliges decided to assassinate Lincoln at Fords Theater, with his wife, Mary Todd, accompanied by another couple, but no bodyguard.
The presidential party arrived at 8:30 and Booth arrived an hour later. At approxamatly 10:07, booth slowly made his way up to back door of the state box after takes a drink at the bar. He quietly opened the door and shot Linoln in the back of the head, Marry screamed in terror. Rathbone tried to stop him, but Booth stabed him in the arm with a pocket nife. Luckily, Booth failed to kill rathbone.
Booth jumed off of the balcony of the state box, landing with a broken fibula, and screamed "sic semper tryanis" wich means "thus to trants" in latin. He escaped on horsback to a nearby tavern. There, a doctor rapped his broken fibula.
Licoln passed away on April 15, 1865, at 7:30 in the morning. Booth and one of his coliges hid in a barn. The colige surrenderd, and came out of the barn, but Booth thaught otherwise. The barn was put on fire, but Booth still didn't surrender.
Booth was shot on April 16, by Sergeant Bosten Corbett.
Only one question remains, Lincoln's assassination, simple consperacy, or grand concperacy?
North vs. South
North South
- more industrial economy - agricultural economy
-abolished slavery - wanted slavery
-called themselves "the Union" - called themselves the Confederacy
- won the Civil War
